An Expensive Trim, A Quick Getaway, and A Father's Day Race

So maybe I shouldn't have scheduled a haircut on Friday the 13th after all.  It's not super awful, but it's not what I was going for.  It's a little shorter and no real style, just a long bang chopped straight across before I asked her to try to angle it a bit.  Basically I now have a shoulder length cut with some short pieces in front that annoy me and I keep re-tucking behind my ears all day.  No bangs.  Oh and did I mention that I scheduled a Wash + Cut Only, so I went in, waited a few minutes, got my hair washed and cut and was done in 21 minutes for FIFTY DOLLARS?  What the what now?  Of course, I left a $10 tip for the stylist as well, so I was out $60.  No real styling, no hair drying...I can't even imagine what it costs to get one's hair colored or any extra services added on.

Moving on.

Phil booked us a 24 hour getaway to Newport to a little Bed + Breakfast place we like, and we stayed overnight on Friday.  It was just what the doctor ordered.  We ate, we walked, we slept in, we ate some more, we shopped, we picked up groceries on the way home and still made it to the Vigil Mass on Saturday.  We have absolutely no photos but it was the start of a nice Father's Day weekend for Phil which he deserved!

On Sunday morning, Phil and five kids ran the 5k race in our town.  The Ice Cream Cottage is a sponsor and it's a fun event plus we can just walk over to the start line.

Happy Father's Day to their favorite!

It was Brendan's (age 8) first time running a 5k race and he did great!  Phil ran with him and said he ran the whole time and had a good attitude.

Then we went to a Father's Day lunch at one of my sister's house, and celebrated my dad and the other dads with some Chinese food for 24.  It was fun and my oldest brother filled me in on all the deets of the Karen Reid case, a controversial murder investigation taking place in our state.  There will be a movie made about it, I'm sure.  (We think she's not guilty)

My two favorite father figures!

The kids made Phil nice cards and chipped in to buy him a ticket to go to the Commanders and Patriots pre-season game in August with Andrew and Eamon.  Declan was immediately scheming how he could get a ticket too, and I hope he can join them.  JP, Maggie, Xander, Brendan, and I have no desire to go.  But we are not going to yuck their yum!

The Cottage was soooo busy on Father's Day, which unlike the last 14 Saturdays, did not rain, thank God.

The school year is finally wrapping up here!  Maggie has a few days of finals left, Declan and Brendan had a field day today and then their last day of school is tomorrow, and Phil's last day for teachers is Wednesday so after that he can focus on ice cream only, phew.  The big kids have been holding down the fort since we opened in May and I'm sure they will be glad to have Dad back in charge.  I hope you all had a nice weekend celebrating the fathers in your life!

  1. Did Declan tie with Andrew!?!? My goodness, he'll be one one to watch. How cool that your family runs races together. My kids tried it one Xmas- one gave up after a mile, two more dropped out, only 2 completed it. I hope school ends on a high note for all of the Martins!

    1. Haha yes, Andrew's goal was to keep up with Declan, as Andrew has not been running in a while. When Declan saw me cheering near the end, he took off sprinting and Andrew was forced to sprint as well. Declan was very happy to have crossed the finish line right before his big bro!

  2. Hooray for a get away. Awesome. Bummer about the haircut, no photo? It is so expensive to get a haircut nowadays. You guys are still in school, Yikes. OMG - that was a lot of rainy Saturdays. My interest is peaked about this murder case. How does your brother know about the scoop? Is he a lawyer? We had a nice Dad's Day here, and the weather was beautiful. Coach golfed with the boys, played tennis with the girls, and we played a hilarious game of family volleyball in the yard after dinner. Chinese food for Dad's day - that sounds like a win, because then the moms don't have to cook either. Smart.

    1. My brother went to law school (and got his engineering degree and his MBA), but works in a different job that uses all those degrees together. He's also super interested because he grew up and then raised his family near all the towns involved in the case.
Coach's day sounds perfect for him! We didn't want to make a dad grill on Father's Day, so ordering food was great, though I would have preferred pizza or subs :)

  3. How fun to see all your men in that race! Bummer about your haircut not being what you really wanted. You need to find ONE person, who you see all the time. Ask your friends who have nice styles, they'd be happy to share their stylist with you.
Happy belated Father's Day to Phil and your Dadd-i-o!

  4. How fun that so many of your crew ran the 5K! What a great way to celebrate Father's Day. Love the "Dad Tax" sign -- hilarious.
