How to Run Your Own Half-Marathon

Phil and I just completed our fourth half-marathon over this past weekend.  Unlike the first three half-marathons we completed, this last one (happily) did not require any race registration, no predetermined date, no money paid to be able to run, no crowds of runners, no pre-race jitters and (sadly) no race t-shirt or finishing medal.

The idea started back in September, when my mind always returns to longer distance running, after surviving the hot summer temps that (for me anyway) do not equate with outdoor runs.  I wanted to give myself a training plan to follow to slowly increase my mileage and keep me accountable.  I thought "wouldn't it be fun to set a goal of running 10 miles or something by Thanksgiving" and I looked up Hal Higdon plans. These training plans are free and I have used them to train for each of the half-marathons in the past, and ended up choosing the Intermediate 1 Half-Marathon Plan.  I modified it slightly and hung it in my office and highlighted each workout completed:

I ran the 3 and 4 mile runs on the treadmill and did the 5 miles and up outdoors.

Of course Phil was in on the plan because we are very competitive and push each other in the best ways.  The training didn't go perfectly because life is busy and injuries/illnesses are bound to occur and this roller became our bestie through the aches:

We were pretty consistent with the plan and this weekend was supposed to be our 11 Mile run.  A few days before the run, Phil said "you know, if we just run 13.1 miles instead of 11 miles this weekend, we could be done with the whole thing" and that sounded great.  That's a perk to running your own half-marathon - you pick the date - and can change it too!

Week in Review: Fall Sports Over, Fall Decor on Sale, and Fall Leaves Falling

Happy Friday!  Last weekend was a wonderful long weekend and we made the most of it.  First up, a Veteran's Day parade in front of our house:

My favorite veteran (of two armies - Irish and American) happens to live downstairs and came out to watch the parade with us, then took the boys over to watch the huge flag be raised at the high school.

Phil and I are still training for our personal half-marathon, and ran 10 miles on Friday.  We feel very slow and old and don't know how we are going to run 3.1 more miles than that.  Plus we somehow seem to be gaining weight through this training plan?!?  Lord give us strength.  And speed.

Declan and Brendan had their last soccer games of the season!!  Declan was a goal scoring machine and still loves the sport so much, but Brendan is looking forward to basketball :)  They had a fun play area set up at Brendan's soccer league for the last day:

Week in Review: Town Meeting, That's Cheating and Good Eating

Since tomorrow is Veteran's Day, I will wrap up the week today on this Thursday that feels like a Friday.  Happy Veteran's Day and THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE SERVED!!  Let's look back at the week with my family of civilians...

The biggest news of the week is that we were able to get a variance passed in our town that is the first step in allowing us to buy The Ice Cream Cottage as its own lot.  It's currently part of the lot of the restaurant next door which would make buying it on it's own nearly impossible.  There was always the option of turning the two buildings into commercial condos but we were hoping not to go that route, so this is a wonderful first step to separating the buildings and lots.  I learned that I do not care for politics at all (I was already pretty certain of that but this confirmed it) and town meetings can get very awkward and aggressive and I'm glad I was sitting in my seat waaaaaay in the back corner:

We were the last item on the agenda, so the room had cleared out at this point, but it was pretty packed and heated in the beginning.

On Sunday, the Washington Redskins Commanders played against the New England Patriots and we were a house divided.  Brendan played the role of Switzerland and made sure to cover his bases with a Washington shirt and Patriots hat!  Congrats to the winning Washington Commanders (and honestly I am happy that they won even though I'm a Pats fan, because a sad husband is way worse than the Pats losing).

Eamon went to the actual game with some cousins (it was his bday present) and was able to meet Michael Vick and play catch with some other big football guy that I can't remember the name of.

Social Media Pet Peeves

A lot of the bloggers whom I follow are writing every day in November and I love having all of the new posts to read each day (see my sidebar, their new posts pop up at the top of the list).  It's inspiring me to write more, but about what?  I have been blogging here for almost 16 years, starting right after the birth of my fourth child.  I blog to keep the memories archived, print a book each year with all of the posts and photos, and hope it proves to my children just how much I loved them.  Ha!  At my funeral reception, they can split up the years of books amongst them...which means I should blog until I have a number of years easily divisible by 7.  Looks like I'll be blogging for five more years!  Today let's discuss some current pet peeves.

I keep seeing one of my biggest pet peeves on social media lately.  To be honest, I have a lot of pet peeves, as is common amongst Type A people.  Man, I wish I could be Type B or C or whatever the less neurotic type is that doesn't overthink everything and need things to be organized and orderly in order to feel sane.  But alas I am not, and so back to that pet peeve.  It's when people use the word LOOSE when they mean LOSE.  Like "Loose weight on this diet!" No, people can LOSE weight on your diet and then their clothes might be LOOSE but if you confuse LOOSE with LOSE I just might LOSE it.

I also get really annoyed at influencers who are just way too young or inexperienced at whatever it is they are pretending to be professionals in.  I don't want to see a mom of two young kids who is 27 years old telling me how to parent my kids.  I want to hear about that from a mom who has raised her children to adulthood and has a wealth of knowledge to speak from.  But the reason that you don't often hear from moms like that is because they understand that the more they "mom" and the older their kids get, the less they actually know about parenting.  The young ones think they are perfect parents and the older ones just know how far from perfect they are.

I don't like it when young models push anti-wrinkle serums (that serum did not take away your wrinkles - you just don't have any yet!) or when fitness influencers talk about how "this one move will transform your body" when it's like um no, you are in the best shape, and work out for hours and eat perfectly, and someone who's out of shape and does ten minutes of crunches each day isn't going to magically transform into you.  Be honest!

Even more annoying are those influencers who are soooooo vague and want you to message them to join their business and be able to quit your job and make tons of money at home.  They claim to travel around the world and work just a few hours a day.  Like what is the job exactly?  How come you never talk about the job and only try to get people to join you?  Is this a cult?

Related are the posts that tease you with a good recipe or nice outfit and then make you comment a certain word for them to then DM you the link or recipe.  Just post the recipe for all to see!  I don't want to have to jump through all of these hoops to learn how to make a low calorie version of orange chicken.  But I really do want that recipe.

Come to think of it, it's really social media *in general* that annoys me and that's why I have gotten off of it personally.  It just always left me feeling icky.  However, since opening the Ice Cream Cottage, I had to set up a couple social media accounts which have been very helpful in advertising, but not helpful to my hapiness when I start scrolling.  I think I'm much better at providing content than consuming it, which I could overthink about how that makes me a despicable person but let's just wrap it up there.  I'd love to hear about your current pet peeves!

Week in Review: Sinners and Saints and Sports

This cold weather has been very welcome this week.  I like my summers to be warm, my falls to be cool, my winters to be cold and my springs to be cool.  50 degrees and sunny must be what Heaven is like, just look at that beautiful cotton candy sky!

And that beautiful foliage seen on my lunch walks!

Our Halloween plans kept changing, but at the last minute we decided to carve pumpkins at home and then let the kids go trick-or-treating with cousins.

About Last Weekend

Last weekend we had a planned getaway to celebrate Phil's birthday to Ogunquit, Maine.  I booked a nice hotel and planned activities (a trolley ride!  a run on the Marginal Way! a piano bar!) and then the horrific Lewiston, Maine shootings happened.  We were supposed to leave on Friday morning, and the killer was still on the loose.  Even though Ogunquit and Lewiston are about 90 minutes apart, we didn't know what direction the manhunt was heading and thought we better be safe than sorry.  We canceled the hotel and quickly booked one much closer on the Cape, in Falmouth to be exact.  We drove down and rented bikes and rode on the Shining Sea Bikeway for a couple hours.  The weather was like summer and it was just so beautiful.
