Week in Review: A College Decision, A Piano Competition and the Start of Construction

Let's start with the biggest news of the week - Andrew made his college decision.  He'll be attending...

We are so thrilled for him, and very proud of his hard work to earn the Chancellor's Scholarship and other merit scholarships.  He hopes to play soccer for them in the fall as well, and will be flying out to meet the coach on Athletic Visit Day next week.  We saw the new field when we visited campus for Easter last year, never knowing he might be playing on it one day!

JP is very happy to have Andrew join him on campus next year...and also because we are letting them take a car with them :)  Andrew really dragged his feet carefully considered his college options and realized that Franciscan was the best financial option and where he would be the happiest.  He is following in the footsteps of his brother, both parents, two cousins, and eight aunts and uncles.  Looks like one year old Andrew has always known he would be attending Franciscan:

Alexander (age 11) participated in his 4th annual piano competition and won 2nd place in his category, Age 11 and 12 Classical.  He basically trains all year on his one recital song, so it's a big deal when he finally performs it.  I need to get a video of him playing the song while it's still fresh in his mind, he is so talented!

UPDATE: Xander recorded a video "with a few mistakes but I don't want to record it again so it's fine."

We attended the Living Stations of the Cross last Friday night.

Maggie was Mary:

Declan was the Child Jesus:

And Xander was Pontius Pilate:

On Saturday we cleaned the Cottage and I want to thank GoCleanCo for teaching me the magic cleaning mixture of bleach, powdered tide and hot water.  This freezer went from disgusting to sparkling in very little time.

Construction on the building started this morning!

Thankfully my dad, who was a builder, is acting as the Construction Manager for us while we are at our other jobs.  Couldn't do this without him or my mom who have been sharing their opinions and tips.  The four of us went to the New England Food Show to test out products and get ideas, while filling our bellies with samples :)

We're famous!  Just kidding, but the little kids think we are since this article came out in our local newspaper...

“We've always had this in the back of our heads,” said Colleen Martin, who co-owns The Ice Cream Cottage with her husband Phil Martin.

“This was definitely a goal over the years of our marriage,” Phil Martin said, adding that he worked in Colleen Martin’s family ice cream store Maggie’s when they got married.

“I've been looking for a while for the right location and the right time.”

  1. Congratulations to Andrew! I am sure that is especially exciting for your family. And also congratulations to Xander, I would actually love to hear his piece if you can get it recorded.

A final big YAY for the Ice Cream Cottage! I read the article you linked, I had to look up what a quahog was so clearly my Midwest is showing. I am just so excited to hear about it. I really will have to plan a trip sometime to come get some ice cream!

    1. I will try to record it this weekend and update the post - sounds like good Good Friday thing to make him do! Phil is from Maryland and pronounced them kwa-hogs when he first moved up here. They are pronounced Ko-hogs in case you want to impress your midwestern friends ;)

  3. So exciting that you will have two boys at FUS. We are hoping all of our kids go there also. Way to go getting that Chancelor's scholarship, that is impressive!

    1. That's the dream, right? We weren't sure which way Andrew was hoing to go, but Franciscan really gave such a great package. The Chancellor scholarship is very attainable, they need a 4.0 gpa, to get $15,000 off. Both JP and Andrew were able to get that!

  4. Great news - I love that Andrew will be at the same college as JP. Congrats to him. It's always such a big decision and I'm sure it is a good feeling to have that decision made. Andrew's baby pic is super cute. What a doll.

Congrats to Xander. A whole year on one piece? Yikes. Irish dancers only work on specific dances for a portion of the year - 6 mos or less, if memory serves. My kids were always so excited when it was time to get the new dance. Is he excited to move on?

I like the way they use the shadows for the acting out of the stations at your parish. Looks like a beatiful presentation.

How amazing that your folks are helping with the ice cream shop. So exciting. Looking forward to continued updates. I'm happy for Lent to end- I dislike trying to come up with meatless meals every Friday, but I'm a tad overwhelmed. Not sure how I will get all the food made for our Easter brunch. It isn't a huge crowd, but Coach will be in Milwaukee with Curly Fri-Sat and Reg has games in the city here. Who exactly is making the egg dish? The green bean casserole? The cherry dessert? I've been upstairs cleaning for our guests and just sat down. I feel like I need a nap. No time for that.

    1. Andrew was such a cute baby, hence the five more that came after him ;) Xander likes to take a week or two off from lessons before starting again. He's hoping for a jazz piece for next year, more his style. My sister is hosting Easter dinner and we are all bringing three dishes or so, easy peasy...I hope yours is as well!
