Helllloooooo! We made it home from a wonderful vacation to Florida, and now we are back to reality, wondering why vacation days go by so fast? It was a great trip, let's recap, shall we?
On December 23rd (Christmas Adam), we left home at 4 am and drove to Maryland to Phil's parents' house. We stayed there for a night, ate a wonderful meal of beef stew and homemade breads (thanks Nana!) and went to bed relatively early for another long day of travel ahead of us. We left from Maryland around 5 am on Christmas Eve and drove to Savannah, GA, arriving around 3 pm. The portable DVD player came in very handy for the long drives and I'm so glad St. Nick left it under the tree.
Our hotel rooms were not ready yet, so we walked around the Christmas market and bought some treats:
Phil was a superstar doing all the driving |
We checked into the hotel and had to take a photo in front of a Christmas tree AND palm trees...very exciting for us Northerners:
We all went to the hotel gym for a workout to shake off that sitting-in-the-car-for-too-long feeling:
Maggie even jumped into the freeeeezing outdoor pool after, her own personal polar plunge.
We ordered pizza to eat at the hotel before walking over to the Holiday Trolley Tour we had booked. The tour was awesome, and it took us around to places we hadn't yet seen on foot. We sang carols and all of the kids really got into it and rang their bells and sang loudly and had such a fun time. I just love them so much. We stopped at the Prohibition Museum for a mocktail (hot chocolate or hot cider or a holiday punch) and a chocolate praline candy and then could walk around the Christmas Market for awhile before getting back on the trolley.
How cute was our driver? |
Acting natural |
Prescriptions for whiskey during prohibition |
She's everywhere |
Andrew said he was really feeling his mocktail ;) |
The Georgia Queen |
We like big, um, ornaments and we can not lie |
And you will never believe who was able to take some time off on his busiest night of the year to pose for photos!!
He smelled a bit like beef and cheese ;) |
In the morning, we all met and had a yummy feast of omelettes and pancakes that was included with our stay.
We got our money's worth :) |
Then we had the kids come to our room, where we had set up stockings for them. It was Christmas morning after all!
The big guys loved their echo dots, but we saved the best part of the vacation as a surprise to tell the kids on Christmas morning. Declan has been obsessed with dolphins since he could talk, so I wanted to catch his reaction in particular:
We drove over to the gorgeous Savannah Cathedral and went to Christmas Mass at 10:30 am, where it was standing room only (we got there early enough to get seats) and the Bishop of Savannah said a beautiful Mass with lovely Christmas music and it was just perfect. I had worried that it would feel really weird to not be home for Christmas, and the days did sort of blur together with all of the travelling, but that Mass made it feel like a very special Christmas indeed.
Wow - what a great start to your vacation. John and I did Savannah a few years ago and it was SO hot and I was underwhelmed, but seeing your pictures I now really want to visit around the holidays. That trolly tour looks like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteAnd swimming with dolphins??!! Eeks. How incredible <3
We all loved it and want to go back because our time there was so short. I can see how doing anything in HOT weather would be a different experience though!
DeleteWow - what an amazing trip so far! You guys are so awesome to gift your kids this trip. And all that driving! Phil deserves extra gold stars for that!
ReplyDeleteAre we awesome or are we just tired of buying gifts?? :)
DeleteI have been waiting for the review of your trip! I am so glad you had a wonderful vacation.
ReplyDeleteThanks Katie - I was so surprised at how well it went, I was expecting the long rides to be horrendous but there's hope at the end of the baby/toddler tunnel!
DeleteSO much fun! I was 100% a dolphin kid too which is why my family went to Discovery Cove in the first place. That basilica is stunning and I love the Bishop gave that blessing to Maggie, I am sure it served her well on the trip!
ReplyDeleteWhat a Merry Christmas you had. Can't wait to hear more.
I thought of you while we were there! All of us agreed it was the best day!
DeleteThis is so awesome. It looks lovely. Coach taught a class near there once, and it was really pretty. Love the dolphin reaction. What a fun surprise! I especially love Maggie's blessing. So sweet. Looking forward to the next installment.
ReplyDeleteAnd when we came home from our trip, a gift was waiting - your Christmas card and poem. We all loved it!!
DeleteThe DVD players is the only thing that saved us on all those long trips to Massachusetts when the kids were little! What a wonderful Christmas day you all had! I think a Christmas trip is such a great idea! We attended a Goof Friday service at the Cathedral when we visited in 2018! Such a beautiful church!
ReplyDeleteIt was so beautiful and I wish we had one at home like that!
DeleteAmazing!! Savannah is on my bucket list and it seems like winter is the time to go. What a special Christmas. I love that you incorporated enough normal Christmas traditions to keep it feeling like Christmas (stockings, Christmas mass) while still having such a fun and unique experience. Love your foot pop at Santa's Workshop ;) And the Bishop's blessing to Maggie! So perfect! Declan's reaction to the dolphins is priceless especially once it finally sunk in that they would actually be in the water with them. Can't wait to read about that! Merry Christmas! :)
ReplyDeleteThe kids really didn't complain that Christmas felt weird, so I'm hoping they weren't too scarred! They were indeed surprised by the stockings and the dolphin swim, so that was fun.
DeleteSavannah is a fun city full of history and of course, ghosts. I hope none hitched a ride with your to Discovery Cove. ;)
ReplyDeleteIs it a rule that Santas have to smell like Beef and Cheese?
I also think it would feel weird not to be home on Christmas, but you were all together, so that is all that matters! Plus vacation memories outlive Christmas mornings.
The ghosts! People were doing haunted tours on Christmas Eve while we were singing carols and in the spirit!
