Declan Kolbe turned two on Saturday! In the morning we had all his favorite breakfast foods - scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, and strawberries. Then we went to Mass and Confession to complete the Divine Mercy Novena (we actually prayed it every single day which is new for us!). Declan confessed that he was growing up faster than his mother wanted ;)

We had a small family party for him and Maggie scrounged up two candles that were appropriate. We always call Declan our little monkey since he is a climber, loves bananas, and loves his stuffed monkey named George, as you can see here on his first birthday:
Just monkeying around. |
Declan wore this birthday shirt all day, and whenever I asked him how old he was he would just stare blankly back at me. "TWO!", I would say, and then he would repeat "TWO!" and hold up four fingers. Good thing he's cute ;)
We had meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner (a family fave, meatloaf recipe here) and my parents came over to celebrate the big two year old. This is how we do birthdays...no big parties, no friends, no themes, just our family making a big deal out of the birthday kid. It allows Phil and I to enjoy their birthday instead of stress over it. It works for us!
After dinner, we brought out the cake and sang to him, and he was so sweet and embarrassed and confused.
You keep singing and I'll keep chewing on my fingers. |
Uh, Mom?? |
He blew out the candles and then tried a bite of cake and said "All done!" He didn't like it!!! #momfail
But he did like the ice cream and was spoiled by a Gammy who spoon fed him. He doesn't get that kind of royal treatment at home normally!
Then it was time for presents. A beach bucket from Gammy & Grandpa that was a big hit because it looked like a duck and he used the rake to comb his hair...fashion first!
And a ball and bubble maker from us...
He saw the bubble maker and said "Botbot. Beep beep beep" because it looks like a robot.
Overall we had a very happy two year old birthday and as Alexander pointed out "I should get the second piece of cake since my birthday is next." He will turn five in July, then God willing, we will add a new boy to the mix in August. It's so cool to me that none of my kids share a birthday month, it will make for a really nice (BIG and BLINGY) mother's ring when my baby-making days are over :)
How is he TWO already!
