Keeping Up with Blogging

Ever since I started this ole bloggy, people have asked me how I have time to do it.  And I used to tell them that it really doesn't take up much of my time, but that is kinda sorta a lie now because writing and reading and commenting feels more like a part-time job some days.  And on those days, I sometimes want to delete the whole thing and hibernate in the real world for a change.

Kidding.  Mostly.

I would miss you guys too much.  Seriously, you all are my source of news, fashion inspiration, Catholic teachings, child rearing tips and belly laughs.  Without you my life is incomplete.

But, how to get it all done in a reasonable time frame without too much angst?  Here are some tried and true tricks that work for me:

1) Get a smart phone.  We were really late in the game getting Internet on our phones, but once we made the switch, it was much easier to read blogs and comment during all those times when I'm stuck waiting for kids (practices, games, pickups from school, appointments).

2) Put a list of your favorite blogs on your own blog's sidebar.  Make sure it is only blogs that you actually read every post, and do not list them in alphabetical order.  List them by newest blog post so that the new posts you want to read are always right up at the top and you don't have to click around to every blog you follow wondering if they've written something new.

3) I love me some comments, and I know others do to, so I like to leave them as often as possible.  Comments are conversation starters and my favorite bloggers usually email a reply to me or reply to my comment on their blog.  I am so bad at this, and need to get better.

4) Write your posts in advance and schedule their publishing times.  That way when all the kiddos are in bed and your husband wants to watch some scary show with dead people, you can write multiple posts very easily.

5) Take lots of pictures.  Pictures can tell a story when you've got nothing else to write about.
Mardi Gras Breakfast
6) Make a blog book through Blog2Print.  I make one yearly, and voila! no scrapbooking or ordering pictures is necessary.  All our family memories for the year are in one place.  Plus, knowing I need to record everything on my blog keeps me motivated to keep writing from day to day.

7) Do linkups with better bloggers.  They are fun, inspirational, and a great way to meet new peeps.

8) Highlight other bloggers in your posts.  It still thrills me to no end when one of my favorite and popular bloggers links to one of my posts and sends some of their traffic my way.  So I like to return the favor and mention my must-reads to the rest of you.

9) Be real in your writing.  Jen wrote about this here and it is spot on.  I leave the crafting to the talented bloggers, the funnies to the comic bloggers, the religious stories to the holy bloggers, etc.  My niche is being mediocre at a bunch of things and excelling at none.  That's what I do best :)

10) Finally, make sure that it's more fun than it is work.  Once blogging is only a chore, then that will probably come across negatively in your writing.  Blogging is the platonic-introverts version of match.com, amiright?  SO make friends, have fun, and don't fret about the numbers of followers and comments you have.  It took me a loooooong time (4 yearsish) to get a decent number of followers but that's not the reason I wrote so I just kept plugging away.

Catholic Woman's Almanac

I found this lovely linkup from Jeannine, and thought it would be perfect for today since my thoughts are all over the place, much like my kids (on their school break).

::Moments of Gratitude
~I'm so thankful for a bunch of days off of work and school this week.  Here in New England, we have February and April vacations while the rest of you get Spring Break in March/April.  I think it's to help the ski slopes prosper :)

::Pondering
~How much I love my husband.  Seriously.

::Praying
~For all the wives who wish so badly to be mothers.  I wish I could bottle up and ship some of my fertility to them.

::Cooking
~Gluten free, sugar free, grain free, legume free, vegetable oil free meals.  It's challenging.

::Wearing
~Black leggings with a tank style maroon dress and a black cardigan.

::Creating
~Friendships!

::Going
~to Coco Key for an overnight with the kids this week!

::Reading
~My Other Self.  My mom suggested this book for my Lenten reading.

::Memorizing
~I am such a bad Catholic, because I am still memorizing the Latin chant we sing at the beginning of Adoration.

::Listening to
~My baby screaming to get down from his high chair.  Get on that, hubby ;)

::Wandering Around the Web
~I have so many blogs I love that I can't keep up!  Today I'll recommend a friend of a friend's blog (that makes us friends, right?) , Team Boda.  Kristen and Matt have 4 beautiful children and the love they share is practically tangible.

::Liturgical Living
~Besides my 20 minutes of reading/meditation I'm doing for Lent, we are going to daily Mass whenever possible.  This week, we can go every day!

::Around the House
~I just finished my work from home for my kid's school, and now I need to eat.

::Looking Ahead
~Planning something fun everyday for the kid's vacation.  Because every.single.day they ask what fun things we are going to do.

::A Glimpse

WIWS

Because another 5 inches of snow was forecasted for Sat night into Sunday, I took the kids to Mass on Saturday.  Phil was helping my brother move, and the thought of taking 5 kids to Mass alone only slightly panicked me until I called my Mom and verified she and my Dad would be there.  They sat right behind us, John-Paul and Andrew served, and I only spent half of Mass in the cry room with Xander while my parents looked after Maggie and Eamon.  Mission accomplished!

Before Mass, I had Andrew snap a picture of what I wore:
To the left, to the left...everything hangs just a little to the left.
Shirt and sweater vest: from Gap (all really old and I'm proud of myself for not buying new clothes in a long time!)

Black cords: from Kohl's (looks like they only have have purple ones left)

Greasy Face: from being a SAHM for a day, or possibly from all the coconut oil I've been eating?

The snow did come, and Evie the cat loves to watch it:

I did resort to the Wiggles to take a shower.

Phil is at Mass now, and when he gets home we are heading to have brunch with some new friends that we were set up with by my brother.  Is that weird?  Or desperate?  Don't answer that, I'm an introvert who needs encouragement to be more social.

7 Quick Takes: The I Was Hungry This Week Edition

1)
Before Lent started I whipped up a chicken, broccoli and ziti dinner one night, and much to my surprise the kids LOVED it!  They will eat all these ingredients separately  but usually when I combine them and add a (gulp) buttery wine sauce, they resist with the will of an ox.
Bye bye pasta, I miss you already!

2)
Ash Wednesday means Lent and Lent means trying this diet for the legals in this house.  I have a confession to make: I read diet/health/fitness books like desperate housewives read romance novels.  I just love them.  Anyways, I made this meatless fried rice and it was yummy.

 3)
Maggie came in from the snow with remnants stuck to her hair:

She's so cool, she's icy.

4)
I tried to come up with a gluten free treat for dessert last night, and I think I found a winner.  I chopped up some macadamia nuts and flaked coconut and toasted then in some coconut oil:
This stuff is expensive!
Toasted Hawaii

Then I melted 2 bars of 85% dark chocolate:
My handy dandy make-shift double boiler.
a.k.a. a bowl on top of a pot of boiling water.

And I poured the chocolate over the toasted goodness and let it cool to make bark:
This is before it hardened, I was too lazy to take a picture of the final product.
 5)
Phil's Valentine's gift to me was to take the kids with him to babysit our niece and nephew - so I had 3 hours all to my self!  How sweet was that?  I went to the gym and came home and cooked and cleaned without tripping over anybody underfoot.  Heavenly.

6)
I guess I'm a food blogger now, I can't seem to stop talking about it!  Or eating it!  Anyways, this is the Valentine's dinner I made Phil.  Roasted cauliflower with paprika for a reddish color, red bliss potatoes, and paprika chicken.  All diet friendly!
I put those saucy splashes there to look fancy.  Or my spoon just dripped.  You'll never know.

7)
Other than that we had a nice low key valentine's Day.  It was the 13th year in a row Phil asked me to be his Valentine, and I'm just so happy that we ended up together.

Have a lovely weekend everybody!
