Week in Review: Bros, Mohs and Woahs

It's Spring Break week in Massachusetts, and all you get is this lousy blog post :)

Eamon (17) and his cousin went out to visit their siblings at Franciscan for a long weekend/college visit.  JP and Andrew fly so frequently back and forth from Providence to Pittsburgh that I didn't even realize until he got home, but Eamon hadn't been on a plane since we went to Florida in 2011:

Take me back

Sending proof-of-life photos to his mom like a good boy.

They stayed in Andrew's dorm room, which already has five people, so it was very tight quarters!  Eamon said he slept on the couch and Andrew gave his bed to his cousin and slept on the floor.  Whatta guy.  Eamon said Andrew's roomies and friends were all so nice, sharing anything they had (including cleats and shoes) and giving them meal punches at the cafe.  They went on a hike to a waterfall one day:

They then took turns swinging from a random vine that looked really scary and I'll spare you the video that made my heart jump into my throat.  BOYS! They also went to cheer on the girls soccer team:

JP sent this video of a rainbow lightning storm, how thrilling!

Meanwhile back at home, Phil and the kids had no school, and I had most of the week off:

I did have to get a cavity filled on Monday:

I had so many people ask me if my shoes were Hey Dudes, which I had never heard of, but they are Skechers and very light and comfy!

Tuesday was the day of the Mohs surgeries to remove the skin cancer from both Phil and I.  They put us in seperate rooms and we were sharing photos (and a surgeon) back and forth, but I'll just give you the before and afters.  First the spots were marked:

Luckily for both is us, it was only one cut to remove all the cancer cells (you have to wait while they look at what they removed in the lab) and then we got stitched up and bandaged.  The next day we could take a shower and remove the bandages.  We were pretty surprised with how big the incisions were and how many stitches we had (covered in vaseline):

Glad that's over with and please cover up in the sun!  These scars are along our hairlines, but they would not be pretty in the middle of our face.  I am ordering a floppy hat and I will be that crazy lady, I just wish I had done it sooner.

Since we can not exercise for a while, we are trying to eat a healthier (lower carb) diet.  I did make that Chicken Caesar Salad Pizza from the recipe I posted last week:

It was quite good!  I'm thinking of making the chicken crust again and topping it with marinara and mozzarella, or pesto and tomatoes and cheese.  We also made grilled chicken shawarma with sauteed zucchini and cauliflower rice:

Of course, we also ate trusty old grilled chicken on salad with blue cheese dressing:

We got Greek salads for lunch before the surgeries, mine had tuna:

We made a meal to bring to a friend who had surgery, which included Phil's famous chocolate chip cookies.  We put the cookies on the screened porch away from the dog (minus the eight I had packed up to bring), left to drop off the meal, took the littles to swim at the big slide pool, and when we got back, Lucy Doodle Martin was on the porch and the rest of the cookies had been eaten.

How did she get out onto the porch?  She has been sick since, and we have no empathy because she ate the world's best cookies.  OK we have a little empathy, but still...dumb dog.

Between cleaning the house and helping at the Ice Cream Cottage to get it ready to open next month, the kids weren't having the most fun break... but we promised them a big surprise...

And just like that, we are jumping into another weekend!  Happy Friday everybody!!

  1. What a productive spring break! So interesting to me that you and Phil had the skin cancers in practically the same place on your hairline! Very glad you got it taken care of.

    1. You know the saying, "The couple that Mohs together, goes together!" Haha it was so weird to have it all happen at the same time in almost the same place.

  3. Could your family be any cuter?? And I am so glad your Mohs surgery went well, and you are on the mend! Both of you! I had that done a few summers ago. I am like a vampire. I never go in the sun!

  4. Glad they were able to get the spots in one excision -- Mohs is no joke and I'm glad for you that the incisions are along the hairline! Thanks for the reminder about sun protection. One of my coworkers was diagnosed with melanoma at age 39, fortunately caught early and hadn't spread, but it's a good wakeup call!

Which brand of trampoline do you have? The girls have been begging us for one. Basically I'm interested in the most budget friendly option that is still durable and safe! I do like the models with the basketball hoops too (I don't think they know that that's even an option!).

    1. We didn't do the most extensive research, but we settled on this trampoline:

It took about three hours to put together, but it's been so fun for the kids!

  5. Rest up and take care of yourselves!!

Did you see the new Martin Family Business Brick House in the City shirt?! I really feel like you need that one. Especially since you know have a Martin family business.

Enjoy the jumping! And the tired kids from the jumping.

  6. Twinning with skin cancer removal - you guys make everything look cute and manageable. Love the surprise. So much fun. How funny that Eamon hadn’t been on a plane in so long. I’m sure he had a blast visiting his brothers. Maggie was so blond as a little tot. * btw - I’ve been reading along, but if I read on my phone it will not publish my comment. Then I don’t always remember to comment when I’m on my desktop. I bought an iPad keyboard, so I can. Write while I’m away from home. I’m here, and I hope I can comment more regularly now that I have an iPad keyboard. ;)

    1. I feel ya - I also can't leave comments on my phone so I do a lot of weekend/evening reading of blogs but then I can't comment. Maggie's hair was practically white but it's darkened a lot as she ages...still a natural blond though!
