7 Quick Takes Friday: Volume 30

Back to Lighthearted Blogging...

1) John-Paul had his nine year old physical this week. He is 50% for his weight (62 pounds) and 70% for his height (53 inches).  I had a momentary flashback to when he was a pre-term baby (5 weeks early) and was always on the 5% weight curve.  I never thought a day would come when he would be considered smack dab in the middle of normal for his weight.  Of course I also thought he would never be physically "caught up" to his peers, since he scooted on his bottom instead of crawling, and wasn't able to walk until he was 18 months old.  But now he is a great athlete and a super fast runner.  It's amazing how time and patience and perseverance can really overcome so many obstacles in life.

(I didn't notice at the time of the picture...but that troll in the background and Xander look eerily similar....)

2) Alexander went along to the doctor's appointment to get shots and his awesome doctor looked in his ears because he has had three ear infections and even when they clear up, there is still fluid inside.  We have been pushing for suggesting an appointment with an ENT to start the process for ear tubes, and she gave us the green light since he had yet another ear infection.  That's four since January.  As much as I hate to have my babies go through the surgery, I love ear tubes and the relief they bring.  No more ear infections, no more antibiotics, no more painful nights for the baby, and no more trouble hearing us clearly.

3) I picked up the kids from school the other day and one of the teachers came up to me and said that today was her birthday, and my Andrew asked her how old she was, and she told him 42.  He said "You look way younger than 42!!" and it made.her.day.  I love that boy, he is so well-trained, and such the little ladies' man  :)

4) The full moon effect was in full force this week.  These kids almost got banned from the house until the new moon. Geesh!
(oh sure, they look all cute and innocent...)

5) What do you get for a mom who has a new baby, but already has other children, and doesn't need anything specifically for the baby?  I suppose I could ask myself that question...but my answer is always diapers.  Or a home cooked meal, but she lives far away.  Does anyone else have any good ideas?

6) As I was hemming and hawing about going to my Women of Grace meeting, and Phil was all but literally pushing me out the door trying to get me to go, I realized just how introverted I have become.  Do you know what my favorite part of every day is?  Lying on the couch in my jammies watching TV.  Not having to entertain anyone, not having to be "on", just relaxing with Phil.  Is it because I am surrounded by people at work and kids at home all the time and need some downtime?  Or am I just lazy?  Or shy?  Is this a natural part of getting older?

7) I just got an email saying this book will be shipped to me on March 12th!  I am so excited!!  Have you ordered yours yet?

  1. You could get your friend with the new baby something for her like some sort of spa treatment. I got a pedicure gift certificate from a friend after I had Rhett and loved it!

  2. I'm exactly the same way. I just enjoy being at home. Of course, I like to get out of the house too, but home is where my heart is. I'm very shy, though.

Can you believe how quickly these kiddos grow?? Sierra gave me a look the other day that reminded me of "little Sierra". I can't believe how old she is!

  3. Whoa ... I just read about that book this morning, by chance. I've been a louse at checking blogs, but a friend of mine sent me a link to Betty Beguiles' blog and, as a "former" reader, I obediently went. I was surprised and pleased to see that she had put out the book! I may have to look into it, as I see it's written by a handful of Catholic mom-bloggers, always a good thing. :)

Glad to hear you are all doing well! (All is well here.) Sometimes I miss the blogging world, but then I remember why I stopped: lack of time!

It's good you are doing Women of Grace. I've heard so many good things about it. I am a lucky member of a women's catholic group, informally known as bible study (because that's what it actually was 8 years ago when the other women started it). I enjoy their company so much, enjoy being surrounded by other NFP-using, mothering, traditional, old-fashioned, faithful-to-the-church Catholics. Love this little bubble I'm in. :)

  4. I would have recommended a pedicure to a new mom as well. Or a good book to read while nursing/feeding.

    #6 Me too!! I love jammy/tv time!!

  5. If that new mom is like me, she won't use the certificate for years because it's so hard to take that time out to go and do that....I have a $50 certificate that I got when I was pregnant with my 2 1/2 year old...Good thing there is no expiration date on it!!

One of my favorite gifts this time around was from MN Mom--she sent a "box of happy" she called it and it was a stack of construction paper, with colored gel pens--like a 20 pack, candy--Dove for the mama (dark)and Nerds and Junior mints for the kiddos....I think that was it, but I loved it, it made our day and the girls will sit during supper making time and just color with those pens!! It came at the perfect time, because that "box of happy" made us happy while we were in the "house of hormonal"

    Your kiddos are adorable...

Can't wait to hear your review of the book....

  6. I was thinking that you can never go wrong with a gift certificate to Babies R Us or Toys R Us or Target. She can get something she needs now or save it for later. And as for diapers - you can never have too many!

And my all time favorite thing in the world to do is watch tv with Dan in my pjs. It's a good thing he is an introvert too!

  7. Target Gift Card! I also just bought a friend a case of flavored water for her first attempt at breastfeeding, which is a nice treat that some of us have a hard time indulging in. Also, maybe a suggestion to go with that gift card of paper products - plates, forks, cups, paper towels. Give her permission to not worry about dishes for a few weeks!

I LOVE the idea of the "happy box" !!!!! Now that is an awesome care package!

  8. I am lazy and shy too. We have a lot in common!

  9. Mine were almost banned from the house, too! I swear, full moons are the WORST around here.

Also, tell J-P that I've been carrying around a letter Lotus wrote for him that she asked me to mail off.

    Like, seventy years ago.
I'm going to blame it on the full moon. Think she'll buy it?

  10. #1: My preemie (11 weeks early) is on Pediasure 1.5 (medical-grade stuff) and went from 3-5% on the growth chart to 25th percentile last November. That was a really happy day for me. Next happiest day: him walking by himself at 2 1/2 years old.

#5: I concur on the pedicure gift card. It's something I'd use but never buy for myself.

#6: I have a parishioner of my husband's who invites me to do stuff and all I have to say is "M invited me to..." and my husband all but pushes me out the door as well. M could be inviting me to go trolling for sailors and I think my husband would push me out the door in order to get me out of the house for something not related to my son.

  12. I am just like you (about the best time of day being when you aren't 'on'). I don't know about you, but I'm an introvert. I always heard that you are one of two people: the kind who gets energy from being around other people, or the kind who is drained of energy by being around other people. Being an introvert, it most definitely drains me, so I think that's why I crave being at home where I know I can be 'off' and just be me!

  13. I agree with others. A gift card, especially for something for HER. One she cannot use to buy diapers ;)
