Alexander The Great...Thumbsucker!

Linking up with Theme Thursday: Thumbs

I love me a thumbsucker.  We've only had two...Andrew and Alexander.  The rest have been "nuby" babies, which has it's positives as well, but thumbs are always available, even in the middle of the night, and my babies can self soothe themselves back to sleep.

We didn't have a hard time breaking Andrew of the habit at all...in fact, his dentist did it for us when he was three, and I'm hoping Xander follows suit.

I noticed Xander sucking his thumb the other day while Phil was holding him, and I thought "Wow, that's so cute, he barely ever does that anymore when he's awake."

He was not only a thumbsucker extraordinaire, but he had to hold something while doing it.  As you can see in the collage below, anything would suffice...a taggie blankie, a seat belt, a scarf, a bag of garlic, his other fingers.  He's not picky, just peculiar!

  2. Thumbsucking is sooo cute!! None of my kids ever really sucked theirs.

I actually sucked my thumb until I was in 2nd grade! And, I used to have this blanket that I used to rub the silky edging of (not sure what that's called). Anyway, I finally quit in 2nd grade when my mom convinced me to give up sucking my thumb for Lent. On Easter, when I tried it again, I was all "bleh...that tastes nasty." LOL

  3. I find it interesting how some babies just pick up on thumb sucking right away and others don't. I babysat a little girl who was a major thumb sucker... but neither of my boys have even tried it! I will admit it's pretty darn cute!

  5. My boys never cared for their thumbs, or pacifiers...if they were sucking on something, they expected it to give them milk or apple juice!

I think your little guy is the cutest little thumb-sucker, and that picture collage is awesome.

  6. That is cute - that's a disciplined kiddo that can give up the thumb cold turkey - props to him!

  7. Luke is our thumbsucker! Mostly at night…he's pretty much given up daytime thumbsucking…only when he's scared/anxious or super tired. Then we know to steer clear and let the boy have his thumb! I was a thumbsucker…for a long time…so I'm hyper-aware that he's still doing this at age 3… LOL How did the dentist help him to break the habit?

    1. She told him that his teeth were going to be messed up if he kept sucking his thumb. Then she said if he stopped before the next appointment, she would give him a present. He stopped that day. He is just such a good, obedient, and easy kid though, I don't think all my others would have done the same!!

That first night, he even told us he had trouble not sucking it at bedtime, so we put gloves on his hands at night for about a week just to help remind him, and that was that!

  8. My aunt always says, "Thumb babies are the best babies." Of course, most of her kids were thumbsuckers, so she might be skewed in her evaluation. ;-)

Francie was the only one who took a pacifier and it was so easy to take thing and throw it away and give her a special stuffed animal instead. She didn't fight it at all. Fiver sucked his two middle fingers at bedtime for a long time, but he's done with that now. Sally sucked her thumb, but our dentist also broke the habit. He told her she was messing up her teeth and that was the end of that. But she is also an obedient child -- I'd like to see the dentist work his magic on Bun. That would be a whole other story. Bun sucks on a disgusting blanket with that silky binding around the edge. Except he has sucked most of it off. So gross. Mopsy sucks her middle fingers and Baby and Septimus are also thumb babies.

Knowing their personalities, I foresee years of orthodontia ahead. ;-)

  9. He enjoys smoking his pipe! All my kiddos did and Miss C is thumb - adextrious! My elder neighbor back in Illinois told me horror stories of what would happen to her teeth. Well, they ended up being just fine and the kids wheened themselves off around the age of 5. It is so cute!

  11. So sweet. My heart is in a puddle on the floor. I was a thumbsucker for way too long (don't ask) but I have yet to get any of my kids to do it. Seke sucked his thumb for 2 weeks when he was about 4 months old and then just one day stopped. Nothing I would do would convince him to try it again. Alas, none of my kids took a paci either. Lots of comfort nursing around here! Maybe next time... :)
