Sweet Sixteen

Our joyful, intelligent, hard-working, holy, funny and pleasure of a son to raise turns SIXTEEN today!  Happy birthday Eamon :)

We started celebrating on Saturday by going out to lunch at a restaurant where his friend's band was playing.

On Sunday we celebrated his birthday at home since today, his actual birthday, involves school and soccer practice and a violin lesson and a volleyball game, oh my.

He asked for maple chicken for dinner and a pumpkin chocolate chip cake for dessert.  His wish is my command, since he never asks for anything on any other day of the year.  His little brothers have been practicing in secret to play "Happy Birthday" on three different instruments.

Xander (age 11) on accordion

Declan (age 8) on violin

Brendan (age 6) on piano

Nana and Gramps sent up a new Commanders shirt from Maryland which was a hit:

And Gammy and Grandpa gave him a new chain for his miraculous medal and a gift card to get food on late practice/game days.  Here's Gammy explaining how beautiful it was for a sixteen year old boy to ask for a chain for his medal for his birthday :)

I sat down the three-birthdays-in-two-weeks guys and gave them all their presents, because they were identical.... a Washington Commanders hat...and...

Tickets to see their first NFL game in January!!  They were in shock.

Eamon's godparents came over to give him a Franciscan shirt and a new water bottle that he loved, and the Martin Family Birthday Committee was in full effect too (Hayley and Jonathan and Fr. Dave) to celebrate this special kid.

Eamon, I know you hate being the center of attention, so I'll keep this short.  We just love you so much.  You may have been the hardest colicky-est baby we ever had, but you have made up for it the rest of your life by being so easy and fun to be around.  You are a straight A student, give your all on your sports teams, are a welcoming friend to everyone, have a spiritual life unlike any kid I know, love to play games and laugh easily.  It is our great honor to know you, never mind get to raise you for all of these years.  We wish you all the happiness on this day and always.  Love you, meatball.

  2. I just love that you ended it with meatball because in my head I always think "Eamon is the one they call meatball" and I thought maybe he's outgrown it. Happy 16th birthday Eamon! I will be praying for you extra today! And what a fun gift to go to an NFL game!

    1. We don't call him that as often as we did when he was literally shaped like a meatball but it's definitely a nickname forever :)

    1. Yes, their first one! Too bad it's the Commanders and not the Pats, but I had to go with Phil's team!

  5. This is so lovely. My Reg is 16.5 and he sounds similar to Eamon. Our fussiest baby, but often our most easy going guy and our most faith focused. I love the looks on their faces for the surprise ticket gift. Outstanding. You guys impress me with your birthday celebrations. The brothers learning happy birthday - also so fun!

  6. Ok, I just have to ask....I'm married to a lifelong Redskins fan but we're from Maryland and he refuses to give them up, even though we've lived in NC for 20 years now. Why aren't you Patriot fans....it would be less painful, lol? At least during Brady's time.

    1. Oh I'm a HUGE Patriots fan! But my husband is from Maryland and he's a HUGE Redskins fan. The kids used to be bigger Patriots fans but after Tom Brady left they are all about Washington :(
