Week in Review: February Vacation, The First Half

It's February Vacation here in Massachusetts, which means that Phil and the kids are off of school/work but I still have to work - womp womp.  I do get out an hour early each day at least.  We seem to have lots going on this week, so I thought I would split this week's activities into two posts.  I swear I used to write about all sorts of topics, but after blogging for 17 years, it's mostly just family updates now.  I've said it all y'all!

For Valentine's Day, Phil and I ate out at The Mooring restaurant in Newport which was beautiful, right on the water.  We got the baked brie (tiny!) and I got the fish sandwich and he got the burger like the seafood lover and hater that we are.  Our hotel was meh, but you get what you pay for, and I had a gift certificate that I had paid half price for.  Their was a very large and LOUD group of people that were down the hall from us and we had to be *those people* who called the front desk to complain about the noise at 9:30pm.  Of course I made Phil do it because I was too scared.  I'm not sure they got spoken to, but they all left after 20 minutes or so and we were able to fall asleep by 10 just like we like it, cough cough old.

On Saturday morning, we drove from Newport to Boston to watch Eamon run his two races at the State Track Meet.  We were just so happy to support him in his first track season, qualifying for states in two events and wondering why he has played basketball for the past twelve years instead of running winter track.  Ah well, you live you learn!  Plus he really did love basketball for all those years.  Eamon ended up getting a PR in the 1000m and his 4 x 800m relay team placed 9th, which was just shy of getting a medal.  It was a long but fun day, and we were very surprised to have one of my sisters show up to cheer him on, along with her husband and their son.  We drove home and went to a vigil mass in town because more snow was forecasted for that night, then ate pizza with the kiddos.

Before

After - dead on the ground

Recovering

Maggie was supposed to fly out of Boston on Sunday to her mission trip in San Juan, Texas, but the snow/rain/wind cancelled the flight and her group had to reschedule the trip from Sunday - Sunday to Wednesday - Monday, which was very disappointing to everyone.  I guess the priest had found out the flight was cancelled right before the goodbye vigil Mass on Saturday, and announced it during the homily.  Luckily our friends had driven Maggie to that Mass and were able to take her back home for us once everything was rescheduled.

On Monday morning, Eamon had his wisdom teeth out and now he is four teeth dumber.  He seems to be recovering well, eating lots of spaghettios and playing video games.  He was supposed to only have a referral appointment this week, but when they offered to do the surgery during vacation week, we were thrilled (Eamon not so much as he was hoping to miss school).

Eamon drools...

...and Princesses rule

Phil took the littles to see the new Paddington movie in theaters on Tuesday and they all enjoyed it.

On Wednesday morning, Phil and I dropped off Maggie at the church in Portsmouth, RI with the other missionaries and they headed up to Boston on a bus.  They fly out at 3:30ish and should arrive at the basilica safely (please Lord) by 9:30 tonight.  Maggie was excited to go somewhere warm for the break, but of course the weather now looks like this:

Ah well, this is a mission trip, not a vacation :)

The barbies

Andrew had a big week, getting a job cashiering at Kroger and was also inducted into a household at college (like a Catholic version of a fraternity):

Nice apron

They all got initiated by getting an eyebrow slit, I don't even.

I almost forgot the most exciting news...I finished our taxes, and all the kid's taxes.  This is the first year that we owe taxes so it wasn't as exciting as getting refunds in years past, but I still love doing taxes.  You can take the accountant out of the tax firm, but you can't take the nerd out of the accountant...or something like that.  I use TaxAct (so easy!) and if you want to as well, here's 20% off your return.

And that's a half-week wrap.  Hope you're all staying safe and warm!

  1. I hope you were a good mom and did not take video of Eamon as he came out from under anesthesia! Two of my kids have had theirs removed - one came out really upset and the other one giddy. I think the videos people put out on YouTube of post surgery reactions are cruel.
    Congratulations on his PR!
I hope Maggie has a fabulous trip. May St Christopher watch over them as they travel!

    1. My husband took him to the appointment and took a video of him on the way home for the siblings - but he didn't do or say anything funny, mostly just slept! None of my kids have been silly waking up from anesthesia... which proves that they should never do drugs :)

  2. I'm laughing with you at the rockstar meme. I have been in those hotel rooms that are not ideal and also the ones with the rowdy neighbors. I'm never too shy about calling the front desk. Congrats to Eamon and also - ouch on the wisdom teeth front. Ed was supposed to do a mission trip over spring break during his freshman year at college - covid hit literally hours before they were supposed to drive away. Bummer her trip was shortened, and the weather thing is unfortunate. I know it's not a vacation, but it would be so nice to just experience warmer temps while walking from a building to a car, or something. (does it sound like I've been freezing my butt off in the Midwest or what?)

    1. They had a beach day planned but had to pivot to a trampoline park! Of course it's back up in the 80s once they leave :) That stinks so much about covid ruining his trip, but he still gets brownie points for *almost* going to serve a mission!

  3. I hope Maggie is having a safe and good time volunteering!! Glad Eamon's recovery isn't too bad. I swelled up like a chipmunk for over a week. Fun for the younger boys to get to see a movie. I have nothing against Paddington but also don't know that I'd pay movie theater prices for him. Last year we saw a lot of movies and I don't think this year is going to be the same. Enjoy getting out of work one hour early. (Sorry you don't have the whole week off but take what you can get right?)

    1. He is very swollen! And his jaw isn't opening very wide. He's going for his checkup today so we will see if it's normal or not. On Tuesdays here, the movie tickets are discounted :) You guys are my movie reviewers, what shall I do this year??
