Colonial Williamsburg and Lazy Resort Days

We stayed in Williamsburg for four nights, and spent the day after Busch Gardens just relaxing around the resort.  Actually, Phil and I woke up and went for a run, then gathered all the kiddos and headed to Publix for groceries.  They all wanted to go because they like Publix and we don't have one near us, so it's a vacationy thing to do.  We had created an easy meal plan and made the grocery list ahead of time and it actually worked out perfect with hardly any food leftover that we needed to take back to MD with us at the end of our stay.  We will keep that meal plan and grocery list for future trips!

We have stayed at Greensprings before, but now it is owned by Hilton, and they are doing some construction and making some changes.  The only downside was that even though it felt like summer weather to us, the outdoor pool didn't open until May 1.  But this place has so many upsides!  We love it because you can get a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite with a kitchen and family room and dining room for pretty inexpensive.  We got two suites (so four bedrooms total that were right across from each other) for four nights for less than $800.  It allowed us to cook our meals and have plenty of space.  Honestly, we only have 2 bathrooms at home so having 4 bathrooms felt incredible luxurious!  As did the large tubs in the master baths:

Simple lunches of sandwiches, chips and fruit

Even though it was our Spring Break week, it seems that nobody else got the memo because the place was so quiet and almost everything we went to do was like a private event!

Pool to ourselves

Workout room to ourselves

Jacuzzi to ourselves

Mini Golf to, you guessed it, ourselves

The amount of fun these boys can have with a ball in the pool is wild.  They were jumping and catching, making up games to throw through the rafters, etc.  Maggie and I were amazed at their simple fun ways.

The resort is situated next to a golf course that you can see out of your balcony/windows and Eamon and Andrew brought their clubs to take advantage.  Hard to tell, but they're playing on the hole right behind our building:

They did not invite Maggie after her showing at the driving range back in Maryland:

On Wednesday, Andrew drove back to college, and the rest of us went to Colonial Williamsburg to walk around:

My four older siblings really were in a Fife and Drum band, my kids are just posing

My street!

This next photo cracks me up because I took a couple of the kids standing still, then told them to jump for the next photo and I could have guessed 100% correctly which of my kids would do it and which wouldn't:

Some are people pleasers and some are party poopers

Maggie found her house

Declan was looking for his name on the houses with no success, and then Maggie told him to pose with this sign because his middle name was almost going to be Botetourt:

A few minutes later, Declan asked me "Is it true that my middle name was almost Botetourt?"  We must protect the innocence of this sweetheart!

With seven kids, I certainly could have used one of these for timeouts ;)

We went back and swam again that evening, watched another episode of The Americas, and I ate my first Crumbl Cookie.  It was very good but I wish they didn't list the calories on the website - don't they know vacation calories don't count?!?

  1. This continues to look like such a fun trip! How cool that you had the hotel amenities practically to yourselves?! And the price for your suites is astounding! I feel like hotel prices have skyrocketed these days, so you really got a steal of a deal.

    1. I thought there was a mistake when I was booking it, because the prices were so low, but it was not! Not sure if they'll go up now that Hilton is putting their touch on it.

  2. I guess gone are the days when the kids were little and you could squish everyone comfortably in just one hotel room! That resort sounds lovely. A lot of school in our area do a spring break in March - they don't use Easter as a break. (But we don't get that week off in Feb like you New Englanders do!) So I wouldn't be surprised if a lot a of schools did an earlier break - Easter was sort of late this year. You guys do vacation right! - mbmom11

    1. We get the third week in February and the third week in April off - it just so happened to coordinate with Easter this year. I love the two breaks but March does always feel really long and boring when everyone else seems to be having Spring Break!

  3. Oh sweet Declan Botetourt. Seriously, that cracked me up. This looks like an amazing getaway and how nice to have it all to yourselves! I definitely play golf like Maggie.

    1. That boy is so naive that it's equal parts sweet and scary!

  4. Fun!! Colonial Williamsburg has been on my list... but we haven't made it there yet. I like idea of doing Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and then Virginia Beach for a few days! Although my younger son is going to Virginia Beach on a swim team trip in June, and I think they will do some of this stuff, so... maybe this will become an empty nest trip for me and my husband eventually or something.

    1. It's a great trip, we don't pay for anything in Colonial Williamsburg, but you can buy tickets to get inside certain buildings and learn/see more. Same with Jamestown, which we did pay for tickets one time. A Virginia Beach add on sounds like a great idea!

  5. Taking notes as that hotel looks like such a great set-up! And Maggie with the golfing looks EXACTLY like how I would look. (She would kick my butt at volleyball though!!) Cracking up over the partial response to your instructions to jump (and the accuracy of your prediction about it). Oh, the sweetness of Declan Botetourt -- I'm sure now he *is* going to be referred to by that name for years ;) Greta used to be so excited when we would be in a restaurant in Rome and see margherita pizza listed on the menu ("they named a pizza after me!"). And my younger sister Kira, who is now in her 30s, will never live down the time she asked for "honey di-Kira" mustard as a kid after my brother John asked for "honey dijon". Priceless!

    1. Yes, she picked her fall sport correctly! Honey di-kira is hysterical! What a great family story :)

  6. I love Williamsburg. I think you saw no one because your spring break was SO late. Maybe it’s an east coast thing? OMG I still have PTSD from when I let coach book a room for us when Mimi was in 8th grade. It was a 1 bedroom suite with a kitchen and I bathroom. The opposite of luxury. It was only for a long weekend, but still- not worth the money we saved. The jumping photo aligning with who would jump anc who wouldn’t is hilarious.

    1. I will always be the room-booker, can't trust anyone else - ha!

  7. This looks like a great trip; I can't believe how inexpensive the hotel rooms were. And the fact that you practically had the place to yourselves is just a huge bonus. Laughing at your Jumpers VS Party Poopers. Oh, and Maggie and I can be on a golf team together; we'd never hit a thing.

    1. I mean, we kinda take over a place by ourselves anyway so it was nice to not feel rude :)
