Week in Review: Last Day of High School, Kind Students, Babe Ruth and Socks with Sandals

Happy Friday!  Does it feel like winter where you are?  Brrrr it's been unusually cold (and terribly rainy yesterday) around these parts.  Normally I would love the cooler weather but it's bad for ice cream, so knock it off Mother Nature m'kay?

Last Friday was Eamon's last day of high school!  He was supposed to take his last AP Exam (Psych) but there was an issue with the exam and he has to retake it next week.  His grades were excellent so he didn't have to take any finals, and he's just been working and having fun since.  Tonight is the Prom and I will be sure to get some photos of my meatball.  I can't believe his high school career is over!

Signing yearbooks

Phil teaches only seniors, so it was his last day of classes as well!  He had to give finals to the students who weren't exempt this week, and the school will use him as a sub for the rest of the year but it certainly feels remarkable to finish his 22nd year of teaching.  This senior class is a great group and Phil's received some lovely notes from his students (name removed for privacy):

We had a Block Party at The Cottage last weekend, complete with a ribbon cutting and live music.  Sooooo many people came out and it was a fun time!

My brother ran for Selectman in his town, and my kiddos who were free went to help him electioneer (?) along with my parents, his wife and son:

Xander has his History Fair today, and he chose Babe Ruth as his topic.  His presentation involves a costume switch from a Red Sox shirt to the Yankees uniform, and I hope the judges love it.  Xander is finishing his 8th grade year strong as he is hoping for a high class ranking.

Xander also had to attend the NJHS Induction of new members this week, after which they all walk down to the ice cream shop near the school.  It's the homemade ice cream shop that we buy our ice cream from, so it's allowed ;)

Declan had a physical on Thursday, and it turns out that he's a healthy boy who is following the same height and weight curves he's been on since birth.  Skinny and short but at least consistently skinny and short!  I took the day off from work and used my time wisely on a stormy day to clean out my closet and bedroom and do the dreaded "seasonal switch".

I'll leave you with the controversial question that is our Battle of the Tips this week:

I would have ALWAYS said "NO" but my own kids wear socks with birkenstocks, soooooo??

Have a wonderful long Memorial Day weekend everybody!

  1. Yes, the socks in Crocs and Birks seem to be very "in" these days. I am very much against it, but then again I'm not known for my keen fashion sense :)

It feels so good to swap around clothes seasonally and get that behind me. It's also fun to see some fresh things in my wardrobe. I always end up forgetting about a dress or two and get excited to wear them for the first time in many months.

    1. All of my kids think I'm crazy on my no-sock stance, and I'm like JUST YOU WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE KIDS AND THE FASHIONS SWING BACK AGAIN! The only thing about the seasonal swap is that my clothes seem to shrink ;)

  2. I would also say no, but my husband ( college professor nerd) does. Also, a lot of the athletes on my campus do as well. Maybe it's stylish?
That stinks about the AP exam - I hope Eamon doesn't mind the delay. That kind of thing would have driven me nuts as a student. For my kids, the worst was starting the ACT and having the test voided because she had the wrong calculator. Like they didn't notice it earlier? She survived though.
I hope your weather warms up!

    1. Eamon said he was glad to have more time to study because he didn't study at all. It's now tomorrow, and do you think he actually studied any more with the available time? Nope!

  3. Just noticed -some of those girls in the JH picture have exceptionally short uniform skirts. Are there no nuns with rulers to measure 2 inches above the knee or less? Or did they roll the skirts up just for the picture?
And I hope Babe Ruth hit his presentation out of the park!

    1. Ugh the short skirts! There are no nuns in the schools anymore, I wish! The principal definitely tries to enforce the longer skirts but this was an evening event where they came in with their parents, and maybe it would have been awkward to discipline a kid in that space? I don't know, I hate it but my own daughter rolls hers too as soon as she's out of my sight.

  4. What a sweet letter. Nick received a similarly sweet letter from a former student yesterday and he's not a super sentimental guy but he said he is definitely keeping that one. It's invaluable to hear what a difference you are making in someone's life!

I thought your brother was Andrew for a minute!! That is an uncanny family resemblance!

The winter weather has struck us too. The end of year park picnic was canceled due to temps in the low 50s ("feels like" low 40s with the wind) and the opening weekend for our pool was also delayed. It's 64 degrees in the house and I'm feeling very virtuous for NOT turning on the heat and just adding a few more layers. Definitely not good for ice cream but looks like your block party was a huge success!

    1. Phil always feels (as does Nick) that nobody really cares about what he teaches because they are teenagers and he is teaching about God...so these notes are extra special. He had a really good senior class this year.

  5. Actually, I just went back and re-read the post and I think that *IS* Andrew holding out the chocolate cone ;) I was clearly confused!!

    1. Hah yes, that is Andrew with the ice cream! That would have been scary if they looked THAT much alike :)

  6. What an amazing letter Phil received from his patient. I cleaned my closet out a few months ago, but I think I need to clear out some more stuff. The cottage looks like it's off to a great start, but I bet the weather interferes with the profit margin . . . similar to caddies - ask me how I know that? I hope things warm up in your neck of the woods.

    1. That's cracking me up that you called Phil's student a patient bc that's what your hubby has :)
