Week in Review: Senior Photos, Free Hugs, Last Meals, Legal Sons and Apple Picking in New England

Maggie asked me to pull out my real camera (dang those got expensive!) to take some Senior photos of her at sunset at a little private beach in town.  How could I say no to that sweet request?

I had ordered the black dress for myself but it didn't fit me right so Maggie took it.

Maggie had actually straightened her hair, but it was so hot and humid (IN OCTOBER PEOPLE) that it restored back to factory settings.  She's still so cute no matter what!

Maggie had a home game last Saturday, and every game was so close and they won in three!  There's my Senior Captain #8 who played her heart out in that game and got great stats:

Maggie texted me from an away volleyball game that "all she wanted for her birthday are Drizzalicious" which I had never hear of, so we bought some and they are GOOD.  I got the individual packs as a treat for only 90 calories.

Meanwhile back in Ohio, Eamon and the other intents (see the missing eyebrow?) have been getting put to the test to see if they are Household worthy.  Households at Franciscan University are like Catholic fraternities and sororities and while hazing is not allowed, they still manage to have fun "challenges":

Eamon and Joe had to give out free hugs, and Joe managed to give one to the President of the University, Fr. Dave Pivonka himself - haha!

His face!

We made high-protein egg muffins for our breakfasts this week, which has been a nice detour from our protein shakes.  Here's the recipe if you're interested.  Each muffin is about 110 calories and has 10 grams of protein (we eat two at a time):

Silicone liners

We try to eat healthy breakfasts and lunches to balance out our treat meals, like what we had this weekend that we both dubbed as our Last Meal if we ever find ourselves on Death Row:

Fried Scallops and Onion Rings for me and Chicken Tenders and Onion Rings for he.

We used our first "free" weekend after the ice cream shop closed to go apple picking!  It was so fun!  And JP was still home visiting on his school break:

Baby apple for my Baby Apple of My Eye

That bag cost $50 to buy so that we could pick and fill it ourselves - what a great idea for farmers.  Hey!  Instead of hiring help and doing all of this grunt work, let's make people buy a ridiculously expensive bag and do all the work themselves and they'll think it's so fun!

(It works too!)

Could you imagine if we sold ice cream by the cone for $4 but said "hey if you wanna give us $10 we will let you scoop it yourself!"

(That's not a bad idea... payroll is our second biggest expense...)

We got all Honeycrisp apples because they are delicious and the most bang for our buck since they are expensive at the store.

We spent Saturday night playing one of the only board games I can stand, though I got snippy a few times telling people to take their turn faster, and to think about what they wanted to do with their turn while the others were going.  I swear I'm fun!  It's the patience I have a hard time with.

Phil bought me this beautiful bouquet at the apple orchard to celebrate Andrew's 21 Birthday:

We have another legal son!  One of Andrew's friends called me to say he was going to come into town and surprise Andrew with breakfast and asked what he liked to eat.  Two other friends texted me to get Eamon and my nephew's phone numbers because they were throwing a surprise birthday party for Andrew, and also sent me this interesting video:

Surprise!!

We called Andrew and sang to him over Face Time and he was sitting with his soccer friends waiting for the game to start that night.  He has a really nice crew all around him and he loves it.  He went to a Latin Mass and golfing the next day and got to order a beer for the first time in America.

Oh and I almost forgot that he woke up to this "gift" on his birthday:

Tuft is now "with someone else who knows how to take care of ducks" (I'm believing this story as hard as I believed the story that our dog went to the farm when I was a kid) and the cat is still Andrew's shadow.  Happy Birthday to our wonderful son!  You are fun and loyal and hard-working and kind and holy and hysterical and responsible and athletic and sensitive and just a joy to raise.  We miss you and are praying for you always.

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend!  We will be celebrating our third birthday in two weeks - the amazing Mr. Martin turns 45 tomorrow!  We also have Homecoming events at the high school - tonight a football game/Senior recognition and tomorrow a dance where the dresses look like 1940 bathing suits!  Facts!

  1. Great shots of Maggie! I see she has her standard pose down perfectly. Great choice of setting.I never did extra formal pictures for my seniors- my one daughter did it with a friend who had a good camera. There were a lot of blowing bubble shots? Cute but weird.
We can't play too many board games in our house because my latent competitive streak emerges unexpectedly, and I become ruthless with my children. I can do Candyland, and that's about it.
    Enjoy your fall!

    1. That's definitely her fave pose! We did others but those are her favorite pics :) Blowing bubbles is a trend you don't see nowadays - ha! When playing Ticket to Ride Maggie was like "Mom, you're stressing me out!" so I totally understand.

  2. Who keeps dumping animals at Andrew's like they are old furniture and not sentinent beings?

    1. I know, right? These animals keep me up at night - are they being taken care of? who will watch them over breaks? when will it stop? Andrew has figured out it's a roommate's girlfriend's friend who did it but the joke's over supposedly. He is still caring for the cat and loves her, but we have cat allergies in the house so he'll have to find her a home eventually. Some things are hilarious to college kids but my motherly heart feels for the animals.
