Breaking a Baby Bump Sweat

A great pregnancy or beginner workout:
{not me}

Get your behind on a treadmill.  Are you there?  Good.

For every run - choose 6.0 (10 min. mile) at 1.0 incline
For every walk - choose 4.0 (15 min. mile) at 5.0 incline
(You can change these to whatever levels you want, but I feel this is an easy enough pace while still giving a great workout.)

1) Run 1 mile
2) Walk .25 mile
3) Run .75 mile (now you've completed 2 miles)
4) Walk .5 mile
5) Run .5 mile (now you've completed 3 miles)
6) Walk .75 mile
7) Run .25 mile (now you've completed 4 miles)
8) Walk 1 mile (now you've completed 5 miles)

The whole thing takes me about 1 hour (maybe 63 minutes?).

{again, not me}
This workout is something I've been doing while pregnant since I can't run as long as I used to, but still want to sweat and get my heart racing.  I like it because the longest run (1 mile) is over right away, and then you are decreasing your run times while increasing your walk times.  I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to do this, but I'll keep trying for as long as I can.  I only do it about twice a week, and then do short elliptical workouts (5 to 6 miles) on other days during my lunch break.  I need to exercise like this because:
A) I sit at a desk for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (plus a two hour commute), and
B) I eat way too much food.  I just love to eat, and I'd rather eat and exercise then have to diet - yuck!

What is your current exercise/diet plan?  I'd especially like to hear what you did while pregnant.  It's almost bikini season!  Hahahahaha, I can't even type that without laughing.  I've never worn a bikini in my whole life, and I certainly wouldn't start now!

  1. You make me feel like such a slacker! Working out while pregnant is hard for me, I seem to get so hot and really uncomfortable, especially now.

I was doing workouts twice a week, Tuesdays is a Latin heat dance class and Fridays is hip hop. But I'm dropping the hip hop, it's getting to hard with all the bouncing. So now it's just latin heat and elliptical with the occasional aquatic class thrown in.

But I hate running even when I wasn't pregnant. I think you're in way better shape than I am!

  2. I run (if you can call it running....my pace is an 11 minute mile, I know, slow) 4 -6 miles every other day and on the weekend a long run.

Pregnancy....ha ha ha....I never excercised and I ate like a pig.

I am very impressed by all the women who work our while pregnant!

  3. Running up and down my stairs checking blogs 50 times a day...hee hee only kidding.

They only time I got in pretty decent shape was when I had a gym membership. I went every day. I have zippo discipline at home.

  4. Just to make you feel better...

Last night I went to the gym and did this workout. Then I came home, showered, got into bed at 8:30 and ate fritos and french onion dip. Phil and I together ate the WHOLE bag! I know if I could just eat less junk like this, I wouldn't have to push myself at the gym. C'est la vie!

  5. I love the captions under the pictures...I don't know why, they just make me laugh. You probably look better than those women. I am thinking about putting Not Me under pictures where it's actually me...especially after I spent the winter eating cookies!

  6. That is great Colleen...you should be proud of yourself. I hate running...but I am trying to do one minute of running with one minute of brisk walking. It is easier for me.
I seem to recall the only exercise I did while pregnant was going from my desk to the fridge. Then at home from the couch to the fridge. Oh, to be young and have a mad working metabolism again; a dream.

  7. Uhh . . . does "spoon to mouth" count as a pregnancy exercise regimen? If so, I am all over that. ;)

  8. This is hilarious. If you knew how big I get when preggers, you'd laugh too. I couldn't imagine running while pregnant. I'd feel like the baby was going to fall out or something!!

    Way to go!!!
Seriously, when I set my treadmill at 4 mph, or even 3.8 mph, my legs have to run. Are my legs too short?

When I'm pregnant, I can't do more than 10 minutes immediately after eating, because of my type 1 diabetes, my blood sugars would go too low. The doctors always want me very low all through the pregnancy, so each pregnancy is as close to a normal person as can be.

    very fun post!

  9. Ahh... Colleen. Yet AGAIN you make me feel like such a slacker. I'm like... HOW much taller that you? And since pregnant I can't even walk as fast as I used to. I had to stop in the middle of the workout to go pee... (definitely pregnant)

...sigh. I have to say. I'm with Aimee.

  10. You go, girl! I can hardly walk across the room (of course my Jelly Bean is due to pop any time now!), but I really wish I had been better about exercise during this pregnancy. Still adjusting to constant snow and a tiny apartment, but hopefully with the next baby (please God) I'll get my rear end in gear!

  12. Ha! You've got to be kidding me! I can't believe you do this workout! You rock. I am lucky to walk to the fridge and back. :) Just kidding. I do need to work out more, but running? And all of this for an hour? I don't think I could do that. I've been trying to get out and walk the neighborhood, but so far I've only done it once, lol.
