7QT: September, School Starts, and Strawberry Slab Pie

Today has me feeling like, How is it September already but also, how is it only September?
You get me.  Joining up with Kelly for Seven Quick Takes!

1)

Four of my bambinos started school this week!

From left to right, they are in 8th grade, 4th grade, 1st grade, and 7th grade.

Their Catholic school has opened for in-school learning every day, and for that, we are sooooo thankful.  Of course, there's social distancing and mask-wearing and it looks a lot different.  The kids are mostly sad that they can't seem to talk to their friends very much, as they can't get close and the masks make it hard to hear muffled voices.

2)

Phil starts teaching at the high school next week for his 18th year.  How is he that old?  Ha!  Of course, this year is looking very different for teachers as well.  He will have half the kids in class each day, and half the kids learning remotely.  They will be viewing the class live and Phil will see them on a tv screen at the back of the classroom.  So he will be teaching to students in front of him and remotely at the same time.  In a mask.  Weird times, but I am so grateful we are trying to slowly get back to normal.

3)

Did you all see the CDC report that only 6% of reported death cases of Covid were people who died of Covid alone?  The other 94% of the death toll died with Covid but had on average 2 other underlying conditions.  Of the 9000ish deaths of Covid alone, 90% were elderly!  How is this all not the biggest news story?!  We have been lied to for months, causing so much anxiety and job losses and worse, for such small numbers.  It's truly astonishing.

4)

I finished reading this book and really believe in the science behind fasting.  We have been intermittent fasting off and on for over a year, but have committed to trying again.  I also think it's funny that the Catholic Church has been promoting fasting for centuries, and I whine and complain about it, but then our diet culture recommends it and I want to jump on board willingly.  That says something about me and my disordered values.  Sorry God!  I don't know if it counts, but I'm trying to pray for and offer up the difficulty of fasting for specific intentions.  God can use all things for good, right, even my wanting to fit into my pants?

5)

Phil made this Strawberry Slab Pie for dessert last weekend, and it was DELICIOUS.  It has a shortbread-like bottom, with strawberry pie filling on top.  We sliced it and served with whipped cream.  There can be so many variations with this, so try it out!  Oh, we substituted lime seltzer for the Sprite to save on sugar, and I think I will omit the actual sugar as well next time.

6)

JP had his wisdom teeth out.  All four were impacted, which makes it a tougher surgery, but which also meant our health insurance covered it - yay!

He did awesome with the whole thing, wasn't nervous at all, and ate a lot of eggs and homemade mocha pudding that his sister made for him.

7)

Today is a half day of school and work for everyone, and it's also a hot one, so I think we will head to the beach for what might be our last time this summer.  What a great way to start off the long weekend!

Have a summery long weekend everybody!  Take a break and remember to live life fully, not like you're afraid of dying, that's no way to live!

  2. With all due respect, the current president has his foot on the neck of the CDC, hence the recent report.

"Let there not be any confusion," Fauci said after President Donald Trump retweeted an article that inaccurately suggested the real number of COVID-19 deaths is 9,000.
"It's not 9,000 deaths from COVID-19. It's 180,000-plus deaths," Fauci told Good Morning America. "The point that the CDC was trying to make was that a certain percentage of [deaths] had nothing else but COVID," Fauci said.

"That does not mean that someone who has hypertension, or diabetes who dies of COVID didn't die of COVID-19. They did."

The report, which was published Aug. 26 and is part of the CDC's standard weekly data update to the public, looks at death certificates and noted that COVID-19 was the only cause of death listed in 6% of deaths involving the coronavirus.

But some have misinterpreted this figure in two ways, by suggesting that only 6% of COVID-19 deaths are from COVID-19, and that only people with preexisting conditions are at risk of serious illness. Neither of these interpretations is correct, say experts.

So no, we have not been lied to all these months.

  3. Hi Colleen,
I'm seeing that more and more people are questioning the narrative presented by politicians and the media. Did you see last week's NYT article which says that up to 90% of positive test results are false positives due to the test being too sensitive? https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/29/health/coronavirus-testing.html It seems that the panic created by all of these cases they're finding might not be justified after all...
