7QT: Scholarships and Spikeball and Sacristans

Dumping some phone photos here for memory's sake, because Lord knows I need all the help I can get!

1)

JP received a scholarship for college from a medical group and we attended a reception for the recipients.  It was very nice, except for the part where JP choked on a meatball and apparently I embarrassed him when I asked "Are you choking?" a little loudly.  Twice.  Moms.  They are the worst.  You'd think in a room full of medical professionals and soon-to-be medical professionals, someone would have run over and helped him.  Nope.  Nada.  He worked it out but it was scary for a second.

2)

Summer is in full swing around here (see what I did there?)

I've had a few days off this week, and I've been able to take the kids to the zoo, library, playgrounds, beach and Burger King, so you could say that the rest of the summer is downhill from here ;)

3)

Oh!  And a carousel ride too!  We used to go to the zoo when my big kids were young, and spending extra money to ride the carousel or the train was just not in our budget, so they think the little kids are spoiled.  Maybe so.

4)

I have been reading The Anti-Mary Exposed: Rescuing the Culture from Toxic Femininity during my Adoration hour, and it's sooooooo good.

5)

My older kids have been working lots but they sneak in fun when they can.  JP went with friends to see Quiet Place 2 and said it was more horrifying than the first one, which I loved but was pretty frightened while watching.  Andrew, Eamon and Maggie went with cousins to minigolf on the Cape and get ice cream, of course.

And there's been a LOT of Spikeball going on in our backyard.  Seriously, this is the stuff summers are made of.

6)

The boys have Altar Server Boot Camp today and Maggie has Sacristan Day on Monday, which I just love how our parish handles keeping both the boys and girls involved .  As I was leaving Mass this morning, an older gentleman walked up to me and said "You've provided a lot of altar servers for our parish, thank you!"  How sweet!  And we still have two more on deck!  I highly, highly recommend getting your kids involved at church as young as possible.

7)

Well the weather is a bit dreary here today, which means I should go grocery shopping and catch up on some laundry.  Do you guys know how much laundry a family of nine creates?  It's crazy.  But I feel like providing clean folded clothes and a fridge/pantry full of food are two of the ways my kids feel really loved.  So I try to do those tasks as charitably as possible, even though I dread them.  We don't do the chores because we love them, we do them because we love the people who made the mess :)

Happy Last Friday in June everyone!

Could you comment (or post!) about the Sacristan work for girls? My daughter really wants to be an altar server, but it's not an option, and I would love to build something really rich for her to be a part of. Thanks!

  3. Laughing and relating 100% to the carousel rides at the zoo . . . things like that happen and my older kids are there with the eye roll and the WE NEVER GOT TO DO THAT comment. I hear you on the laundry. I am wicked fast at doing laundry and folding/sorting it. I've been known to sort a load and later that day send a kid up to fetch me the basket waiting to be folded . . . um, it isn't located because I didn't realize that I'd already folded it. I'm that good. But, how wonderful would it be if they just bought their pile to their room and put it away? Mine are old enough and capable. Guess how often I find a pile toppled over because they want something from the bottom of the pile but don't want to take the time to carry it to their room - too often, is the answer. Our church hasn't brought back altar servers yet since the pandemic. My kids have taught religious ed classes while in high school which was a great experience.
